‘Stop Lying!’ Karan Johar Claims Only One Flop In 2024; Reveals Why He Sold Dharma Stakes

A few months ago, Karan Johar sold 50% stakes in Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla for Rs 1000 crore.
Karan had said that he wanted to invest more in mid-budget movies and that is why he had to sell some stakes in Dharma.
The producer had revealed, “It’s the middle-budget film, where the cost to profit is super high. Those are the films that you can fund entirely on your own, and you can enjoy and reap the benefits of the big breakthrough profits. I believe the real bread and butter, the real money comes from middle-budget films.”

Karan Johar’s latest statement
In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Karan Johar revealed the real reason why he sold Dharma’s stakes and also claimed that a majority of his recent productions have worked, except Jigra, which flopped at the box office.
Karan Johar said, “Saal me do-teen picturein nahi chalti hai, but log social media ki wajah se ek perspective bana lete hain. Last year was very profitable for us and only one film, Jigra, had not worked.”
He added, “The reason why I sold stakes was not because mujhe paison ki zaroorat thi, it was actually because I wanted to grow and expand Dharma. I wanted to start distributorship; that is why we hired Bhumika Tiwari. I wanted to start my own music label. I want to make films on my own so its whole profitability belongs to me.”
The reactions
Many users online are calling out Karan Johar, accusing him of being dishonest about the performance of his films. According to them, not just Jigra, but several other Dharma Productions’ releases like Yodha and Mr. & Mrs. Mahi also failed to make a mark at the box office last year.
One user commented, “That’s taking it too far. When Kjo took over after his dad passed away, Dharma was already failing. He actually made it one of the most successful and prominent production houses, but lost his way in the past decade or so.”
Another user commented, “I dont know whats worst. Karan’s direction or his acting when he keeps that straight face and says we’re not running into losses, we only sold this to expand and sh*t. Yaa sure.”
One user reacted, “Karan knows he’s lying but he also can’t be honest because he’s still a business man and has to make his product seems buyable. If he himself said “yeah my films are flopping” financiers would back out.”
After his last movie, Kesari Chapter 2, Karan Johar is gearing up for Param Sundari with Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor.
After that, he will also start Kartik Aaryan's NagZilla.
