Sunny, Akshay Express 'Shock' As Air India Plane With 242 Passengers Crashes In Ahmedabad

An Air India flight to London from Ahmedabad carrying 242 passengers crashed into a residential area right after take-off.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner twin jet was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members including Pilot in Command Sumit Sabharwal and co-Pilot Clive Kunder.

Out of the total 242 passengers on board the plane, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national.

According to The Hindu, a source in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said, “On 12th Jun, 2025, M/s Air India B787 Aircraft VT-ANB, while operating flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, has crashed immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad. It gave a ‘MAYDAY’ Call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. Immediately after departure from Runway 23, the Aircraft fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site.”

Sharing the details, Air India wrote on X, “Air India confirms that flight AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident today after take-off.

The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.

The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals.
